In Hindu traditions, Shiva is revered as Mahadeva, the great deity associated with transformation, yogic stillness and compassionate grace. The trishula is commonly interpreted as a sign of divine power; the damaru as rhythm and sound; and the crescent moon and Ganga as elements of Shiva’s sacred iconography. Different traditions offer complementary interpretations of these symbols.
Shivoham (“I am Shiva”) belongs to a contemplative, non-dual vocabulary. It is not simply a claim about personal identity, but a spiritual expression whose meaning depends on its philosophical context.
SACRED PILGRIMAGE
The twelve Jyotirlingas are especially revered Shiva shrines in Hindu pilgrimage traditions. Regional traditions may vary in some identifications and spellings.
SACRED MANTRA
ॐ नमः शिवाय
Often rendered as “Om, reverence to Shiva,” this is one of the most cherished mantras in Shaiva traditions. The five syllables of Namaḥ Śivāya are central to the Panchakshari mantra; the prefixed Om is sacred in its own right. Devotees use the mantra for remembrance, contemplation and worship.
FEATURED LISTENING
Hear Shastra Wisdom’s devotional rendition of the ancient Tryambaka mantra. Traditionally associated with Rudra–Shiva, its imagery is a prayer for release from bondage and mortality, not a guarantee of physical healing.
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं

उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय
